The BRACAC’s medical unit includes a child-friendly examination room and small laboratory. Providers with specialized training and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of child sexual abuse conduct comprehensive child sexual abuse exams at no cost to the family. A comprehensive exam is conducted to:
- Ensure the safety and well-being of child sexual abuse victims
- Diagnose, document, and treat medical conditions resulting from abuse
- Collect forensic evidence, if applicable
- Provide reassurance to the child and family
- Make referrals for additional medical and mental health services, if applicable
Providers
The Center’s medical unit is staffed by volunteer providers who commit to providing both regularly scheduled examinations and acute, emergency examinations. These services are provided regardless of a family’s ability to pay.
Because the Center’s physicians provide these services on a voluntary basis, their only contact with the children is through their time at the Center. Providers do not provide these services at their place of employment and do not maintain records or discuss BRACAC cases through their place of employment.
Referrals & Scheduling
The Center works closely with members of the multidisciplinary team and can receive medical referrals from any member of the team. Medical examinations are scheduled on a regular and acute basis, as needed.
Resources for Medical Professionals
Medical professionals in the BRACAC’s service area may call the Center for medical consultation; however, the consultation call to the Center DOES NOT meet the requirements for mandated reporting. Please contact your local Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) office or your local law enforcement agency to report suspected child abuse. The Center will gladly assist medical professionals with the reporting process by providing necessary contact information.
If your medical clinic is interested in free prevention materials to utilize in your office, please contact the Center at (270) 783-4357.
